The Importance of Exercising Feet

The foot is one of the most important body parts when it comes to most athletic activities. Therefore, it is important for athletes to not neglect working out the foot muscles. There are a number of positive benefits to doing this. These include increased stability, control, and power. Working out the feet will also help prevent injuries to the foot by increasing durability. Exercises that work out the feet include toe raises, toe curls, and calf raises. Once finished, rolling out the foot with a tennis ball or foam roller is advised to stretch the muscles post-workout. If you do decide to do foot exercises, it is important to start slow and know what type of foot you have. For those with flat feet, it is recommended to wear shoes that provide proper support as this will allow for a safer exercising experience.

Everything to Know About Plantar Fasciitis

Many people who suffer from foot pain are diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, but what is it? Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament in the heel. Symptoms consist of a stabbing or burning pain in the heel, which tends to worsen from overuse. Thankfully, it is a condition that can be treated. Typical causes of plantar fasciitis include repetitive movements from athletic activities, flat feet, obesity, age, and poor footwear. What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Public Showers and Athlete’s Foot

Those who use public showers, especially students in dorms, should avoid going barefoot in them. Public showers can harbor bacteria and fungi that can cause foot conditions such as athlete's foot or toenail fungus. Even worse, MRSA bacterium could be in the shower and is more serious than a fungal infection. The best way to avoid an infection is to utilize shower shoes to avoid contact with the ground. Once you have finished showering, make sure to thoroughly dry your feet. If you notice red spots on your feet that are either itchy or painful, you may have a fungal or bacterial infection. Be sure to see your podiatrist for a proper diagnosis.

Athlete’s Foot: The Sole Story

Athlete's foot, also known as tinea pedis, can be an extremely contagious foot infection. New York Giants Cornerback Eli Apple recently suffered an ankle injury. He sustained the injury during a very close-scoring Giants vs Jets preseason game. While the Giants came out on top, the second year player was left with an injury. Apple had previously injured his other ankle, which comes on top of a number of other afflictions and conditions that have left him on the sidelines for awhile. Giants coach Ben McAdoo is concerned with his condition and how long he’ll be out for. It is currently unknown how severe the injury is.
